Total Cost of an Electric Car in the US: How to Calculate TCO

Short answer

The useful measure is net cost: every cash outflow minus the equity left at the end. Compare each option over the same term and mileage, with several resale-value assumptions.

The real cost of an electric car shows up neither on the sticker price nor the monthly payment. It's calculated over a specific period, using the price you actually paid, resale value, charging, insurance, maintenance, and financing.

That's what TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) means: what the car really costs you over 3, 4, or 5 years, after resale or lease return.

Key point: the higher your annual mileage, the more an EV's advantage tends to show. Fixed costs and depreciation always weigh in, but every mile driven at a low energy cost widens the gap versus a gas car.

Short formula: TCO = everything you pay minus what the car is still worth. To compare cash, an auto loan, a lease with a buyout, and a lease fairly, always keep the same time horizon and the same mileage.

A simple example: 4 years and 48,000 miles

Take an EV bought new for $38,000 actually paid, after any discounts and confirmed incentives. It's kept for 4 years, driven 12,000 miles a year, and resold conservatively for around $21,000.

In this example, depreciation is still the single biggest line. In other words, purchase price alone doesn't settle it: a pricier vehicle at checkout can end up cheaper if its real resale value holds up better. Compare current listings, insurance quotes, and model-specific maintenance plans instead of assuming that advantage.

Mileage: where the EV wins

At low mileage, depreciation and insurance dominate. At high mileage, every additional 1,000 miles adds far less energy cost than it would with a gas car.

For a rideshare or delivery driver logging 35,000–40,000 miles a year, energy weighs much more heavily in the result. A several-thousand-dollar annual gap is possible with mostly home or depot charging; frequent DC fast charging, commercial insurance, tires, and repair downtime can narrow or erase it.

Charging: the variable line item

For frequent interstate or cross-country travel, add a separate road-trip scenario: usable 70–75 mph range, winter or desert consumption, towing if relevant, and the share bought at DC fast chargers. Home-only electricity can materially understate TCO for a driver who regularly crosses several states.

Driver-assistance software is a separate TCO line

Treat Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and similar paid assistance as software, not as range or a guaranteed residual-value asset. Add either the upfront purchase price or the subscription payments you actually expect to make. At exit, assign only the premium supported by comparable VIN-equipped used cars; a subscription and a promised future capability should receive no automatic resale value.

FSD (Supervised) still requires an attentive driver and is not autonomous driving. Also compare the insurance effect, eligible hardware, current feature availability, and package transfer terms before including it in a buy-versus-lease calculation.

Resale: test three scenarios

The result depends heavily on resale price. Before buying, test at least these three scenarios against comparable listings — not just a theoretical valuation-tool number.

If the case for cash, a loan, a lease with a buyout, or a lease only works out in the optimistic scenario, the depreciation risk is probably too high.

Cash, auto loan, lease with buyout, lease: comparing properly

Buying cash or financing means you carry the depreciation risk but keep a resale value. In a lease with a contractual return option or a lease, depreciation is baked into the payments, with return conditions attached. A fair comparison adds up every cash flow over the same period.
