Electric Car Charging Cost in the UK: Home vs Rapid Charging

Short answer
Annual charging cost depends on mileage, real consumption, and the mix of tariffs you actually use. Home charging is usually cheapest; a motorway-rapid-heavy case needs its own calculation.
"EVs are cheaper to run" holds up in the UK, but the size of the gap depends heavily on where you charge. Between an off-peak home tariff and a motorway ultra-rapid charger, the cost per mile can vary by a factor of eight or more.
The right way to think about it is your charging mix. Home off-peak, home standard rate, public AC, off-motorway rapid DC, and motorway ultra-rapid DC don't weigh anywhere near equally in your annual budget.

The more your habits lean on rapid or ultra-rapid charging, the higher your energy budget climbs. The sections below break down the two variables behind these swings: consumption and the price per kWh.
Where it starts: consumption
To sharpen this budget, start from a realistic consumption figure rather than the WLTP combined number alone — WLTP is useful for comparing two models, but it often understates real-world cost on a motorway run or in cold weather.

The motorway is the most sensitive case: at the 70mph limit, the consumption gap between two models can reach 20% or more. Since rapid/ultra-rapid charging costs more than charging at home, a long motorway trip can easily create a £15–40 difference on the electricity bill alone. A more efficient model also cuts the time spent at rapid chargers, especially when the charger's real output power is limited.

The formula is 837 × consumption ÷ 100. In the average-EV scenario, moving from 60 to 70 mph adds about 42 kWh one way. At 70 mph, the gap between the efficient and high-consumption cases reaches 92 kWh. Double the figures for a round trip (1,674 miles), and always follow the posted speed limit — the A9's Perth–Inverness stretch is a 60mph single carriageway, not the 70mph you'll have run on most of the M-road legs further south.

The math is simple: cost per 100 mi = consumption × price per kWh. The last column then translates that cost into the MPG a petrol car would need to match it, assuming petrol at £1.5/litre.
For comparison, a petrol car averaging 43 MPG costs about £15.7 per 100 mi. Home charging stays clearly cheaper; leaning heavily on motorway ultra-rapid charging brings an EV close to that same cost.
The extra costs people forget
At home, installing a 7kW charger typically runs £800–£1,200 including installation — more if you need a consumer-unit or supply upgrade. The old EV Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) grant for homeowners with off-street parking closed in 2022; a narrower grant now covers renters and flat/leaseholders in some cases, plus a separate Workplace Charging Scheme for employers. Check current eligibility before assuming any grant applies to your own installation.
