Electric Car Charging Cost in Canada in 2026

Charging an EV is usually cheaper than fuelling a gas car in Canada, but there is no single national electricity price. Your province, utility plan, access to home charging, winter driving, and reliance on highway fast chargers determine the real result.

Build the estimate from your actual charging mix. A low residential rate in Quebec or Manitoba produces a very different budget from a higher-cost province, territory, or public-only charging routine.

Use realistic Canadian consumption

A rated consumption figure is useful for comparing vehicles, but cold weather, winter tires, cabin heat, short trips, and battery conditioning can materially increase the energy drawn from the wall.

Toronto to Montréal by EV: how many kWh?

For a Canadian example, use approximately 545 km by the Highway 401 corridor. Exact mileage depends on the endpoints and route; Destination Toronto lists Montréal at 545 road kilometres from Toronto.

The formula is 545 × consumption ÷ 100. In the average-EV scenario, moving from 100 to 110 km/h adds about 10.9 kWh one way. At 110 km/h, the gap between the efficient and high-consumption cases is 33 kWh. Double the figures for a round trip, and follow the posted limit on each province's section.

The table shows energy used by the vehicle. With 8% charging losses, 120 kWh of driving consumption means about 129 kWh drawn from chargers. These are planning cases, not model-specific test results. Cold, wind, snow, winter tires, traffic, elevation, and payload can all move the result.

The calculation is cost per 100 km = consumption × price per kWh. The last column converts the same cost into equivalent gasoline consumption at $1.7/L.

For comparison, a gas car using 6.5 L/100 km costs about $11 per 100 km. Home charging is generally much cheaper; frequent highway fast charging narrows the difference.

The Canada Energy Regulator shows a wide provincial and territorial spread in residential electricity costs. Replace the planning value with your own bill's incremental kWh rate and check the charging network's app before using a public station.

Home charger and public-charging costs

A Level 2 installation can require the charging unit, electrical permit, labour, cable routing, and sometimes a panel or service upgrade. Get an electrician's quote before treating the charger as a fixed-price accessory.

Natural Resources Canada says some provinces currently offer home-charger rebates of up to 50% of installation cost. There is no universal federal single-family-home rebate: check the current federal guidance and your provincial utility before ordering equipment.
